Sirius Satellite Radio

  Sirius Soccer website

You may know Sirius satellite radio (Sirius) as the place where Howard Stern went after leaving traditional broadcast radio. However, Sirius also carries live play-by-play radio commentary from the EPL and UEFA Champions League among the many other sports they distribute.

Sirius recently merged with the other satellite radio company XM and is now known as Sirius XM. For Sirius subscribers, soccer programming is carried on Channel 125 and for XM subscribers’, soccer is carried on Channel 241.

More EPL games will be broadcast live for the 2009 / 2010 than last season when most games featured Chelsea. The base of games has been broadened to include all EPL games with games being originated by English Premier League Radio. Recently five games were broadcast live over the weekend –two on Saturday, two on Sunday and the Monday afternoon game. In addition to EPL games, selected UEFA Champions League games will also be broadcast live.

The BBC radio call-in football show Radio 606, which is
originally broadcast in the UK on Saturday and Sunday evenings, will also be a part of Sirius’ soccer offerings (on tape delay only).

Other soccer programming includes the Football Show, a weekly show on Wednesday from 5pm – 8pm ET and the EPL Preview Show 90 minutes (approx.) before the kick off of the first EPL game of the week, which is usually on Saturday morning. Both shows feature Charlie Stillitano (ex-general manager of the Metrostars) and legendary soccer star Giorgio Chinaglia, late of Swansea, Lazio and the Cosmos.

It's especially interesting when the show has an Italian speaking guest who can't speak English, or an English speaking guest who can’t speak Italian.

All live games and shows are repeated regularly during the week as currently there is not enough original programming to fill the time allotted. World Soccer Daily, a two hour Monday through Friday show, which had been the staple diet of soccer enthusiasts for three years, was recently canceled leaving many hours of unfilled soccer time.

Watch this space as it appears that a regular daily soccer show will again feature on Sirius XM.

In the meantime, we are going to keep the picture of Neil Barnett, Media Director of Chelsea FC (or similar title) as he was a mainstay of the Football Show for at least 2 years, calling in for every show, and actually hosting on occasions when Charlie wasn’t available.
